FAQs

Frequent Questions
Do online missionaries have to be licensed teachers?
No, we provide all the training you will need. Missionaries must be Christians who can give reasons for the faith they have, but the conversations with students usually follow a defined curriculum so no lesson planning is required nor is prior teaching experience needed.
What are the requirements and time commitments of our online missionaries?
We require all missionaries to apply, join a English Cafe Overview session, complete an online, self-paced video training before being approved to work with students. After final approval, missionaries should only invite students to class if they can meet weekly for one hour for a minimum of 7 weeks straight.
Can online missionaries choose students from a specific country?
Yes, we try to accommodate making missionary-student pairings based on the desires of the missionary. However, if we are not currently running ads in the desired country, there may not be any available students.
What is the minimum age for online missionaries and students?
Our curriculum is created with adults in mind. We accept missionaries and students over 18 years old.
What are classes like?
We have two class types: group (up to 5 students) and one-on-ones. For 1:1 classes we request that only male missionaries meet with male students and female missionaries with female students.
Each class starts with a module or set of lessons. Usually starting sets are 7 lessons long. Each class meets for 1 hour each week. If the student and missionary would like to continue working together after the completion of all the lessons in one module, they may continue to the next module.
What are lessons like?
Each lesson consists of this basic format: new vocabulary, idioms, introduction to the Bible passage and then a presentation of the Bible passage followed by discussion questions. The entire lesson is formatted in such a way so that we have the students talking about 80% of the time. Each lesson lends itself to students talking, thinking about the Bible content and discussing it. Truth is presented to the students through the Bible passages and the missionary's answers to discussion questions.
Our lessons are not about teaching English grammar and syntax but about giving the student plenty of English conversational practice by talking about the Bible.
The Bible is the focus in each lesson and we clearly outline to incoming students that the Bible will be the main focus.
